+++ Update April 24, 2024: Regulation on packaging and packaging waste (PPWR) adopted in EU plenary +++
Today, on April 24, the plenary of the EU Parliament voted on the English version of the PPWR. The regulation was adopted with 476 votes in favour, 129 against and 24 abstentions.
The translations and legal language checks in all official EU languages are expected to be completed by June 2024. After the European elections (6 to 9 June 2024), the newly elected Parliament must adopt the final version following the corrigendum procedure, which could take place in autumn 2024 as things stand at present (Note: The adoption is a formality – however, the new Parliament is not bound by it). The final version will then be adopted by the Council and published in the Official Journal of the European Union (entry into force 20 days after publication in the Official Journal, general validity 18 months after entry into force).
We are very positive about this development and remain convinced that the PPWR is an important milestone for reducing packaging waste in the EU while harmonising the internal market for packaging and promoting the circular economy.
It further emphasises the importance of extended producer responsibility. With RecycleMe, we have the necessary expertise to provide companies with the best possible support in implementing the new requirements, while they can continue to focus on their core business and play their part in a functioning circular economy.
Take the opportunity to optimally prepare your company for the upcoming changes. Register now for our webinar on 28.05.2024 from 4:00 to 5:00 pm (CEST) and receive valuable information to successfully master the requirements of the new PPWR.
